Holy Week Chapel

Several members of the Senior Class led our chapel time on April 14 as we focused on the events of Holy Week. Elise Berryhill, Claire Ekbom, Aidan Kluth, and Faith Monson read key passages from the Gospel of John while the rest of the student body followed along in their Bibles.

We read about the events of Maundy Thursday in John 13:1-35.
Maundy, like the English word Mandate, is derived from the Latin word Mandatum which means Commandment. On this day, Jesus gave a new commandment to his disciples to love one another.

We read about the events of Good Friday in John 18:28 - 19:42.
Good Friday is good because on this day, Jesus paid the penalty for our sins.

And, we read about the events of Resurrection Sunday in John 20:1-31. On this day, Jesus defeated death and resurrected to give eternal life to all who trust him.

Following each reading, Mrs. Vogel and Aidan Kluth led us in singing one or two historically significant hymns related to that passage. We learned and sang the following:

  • What Wondrous Love Is This - an American Folk Hymn

  • O Sacred head, Now Wounded - by Bernard of Clairvaux and J.S. Bach

  • Alas! and did My Saviour Bleed - by Watts and Wilson

  • Alleluia! Alleluia! - by Wordsworth and Beethoven

  • Christ the Lord Is Risen Today - by Charles Wesley

We ended our time together by singing these words from the last verse of Wesley's Christ the Lord Is Risen Today:

Soar we now where Christ has led, Alleluia!
Following our exalted Head, Alleluia!
Made like Him, like Him we rise, Alleluia!
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia!
